Originally from Yorkshire, Michaela Kennen is a voice and dialect coach working across theatre, film and television. She trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and L’École Jacques Lecoq in Paris before specialising in voice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
Michaela has worked in most of the producing houses in the West End and has regularly worked with many of the UK’s major theatre companies including: The National Theatre, The Almeida, The RSC, The Old and Young Vic, The Donmar Warehouse and Sheffield Theatres. She has also taught at several London drama schools including Guildford School of Acting, Mountview, Webber Douglas, and most recently at Guildhall School of Music & Drama with young actors such as Toheeb Jimoh, Ellis Howard and Samuel Blenkin.
Michaela has coached actors including Eddie Redmayne, Jessie Buckley, Zoë Wanamaker, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Dominic West, James Norton, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ben Barnes, Cara Delevingne, Layton Williams, Skylar Astin, Matt Smith, Beverley Knight, and Emilia Jones. She was part of the original creative team of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, which went on to win seven Olivier Awards, and continues as dialect coach on the West End production.
With a background in movement and voice, Michaela brings a deep understanding of how the physical and vocal aspect of a character comes together. She has a knack for finding the key that unlocks each actor’s learning, knowing what to say and when, and guiding them with honesty, kindness and precision. Her aim is to help actors discover the nuances of an accent and make it feel natural, confident and truly their own.
